What makes it marvelous

Ala Archa protects about 165 km² of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range, part of the Tian Shan. From the park entrance at around 1,500 m, the valley climbs to the 4,895 m summit of Semenov-Tian-Shansky Peak, and more than 20 glaciers cover about 54 km² of the high ground. Juniper and spruce line the lower valley; snow leopards, wild goats, roe deer and marmots live above.

Why visit

Few capitals have high mountains this close. Within an hour of Bishkek you can be walking up a river valley toward glaciers, on a trail that leads to the Ak-Sai Glacier and the Ratsek hut, a base for climbers.

What to know before you go

🗓️ Best time

Late summer and early autumn, when the trails are clear of snow; the park is open all year.

🧭 Getting there & access

About 35 km south of Bishkek by road. A nominal entry fee is charged at the park gate, and trails start where the road ends.

Ala Archa is the mountain park on Bishkek’s doorstep. About 35 km south of the Kyrgyz capital, a road follows the Ala-Archa river into the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range of the Tian Shan, and within an hour of the city you are standing among spruce and juniper beneath glaciated peaks.

The park, established in 1976 and covering about 165 km², climbs from roughly 1,500 m at its entrance to 4,895 m at the summit of Semenov-Tian-Shansky Peak. More than 20 glaciers cover about 54 km² of its high ground, and the valley is home to snow leopards, wild goats, roe deer and marmots.

From the road end, trails head up the main valley and steeply toward the Ak-Sai Glacier, where the Soviet-era Ratsek hut now serves as a base for climbers. Come in late summer or early autumn, when the paths are clear, and pack for cold even on a sunny day.
