The Most Beautiful Places in Patagonia

5 places · every one real, mapped, and worth the trip

Patagonia is the wild southern end of the Americas, split between Chile and Argentina — a land of granite towers, blue glaciers, wind-scoured steppe, and coastlines loud with wildlife. This is our editors' pick of its most beautiful places, from the great trekking parks to a glacier you can watch calve and a coast of whales and penguins.

It isn't a strict ranking. Each is a real, mapped place with an honest note on how to reach it and the season that shows it best — and in Patagonia that usually means the long, windy days of the southern summer.

  1. Torres del Paine The great trek

    Magallanes, Chilean Patagonia

Chile's flagship park of sheer granite towers, hanging glaciers, and turquoise lakes, laced by the famous W and O circuits.

  2. Mount Fitz Roy The skyline peak

Los Glaciares National Park, Santa Cruz, Argentina

The jagged Fitz Roy massif above El Chaltén in Argentina, its spires mirrored in Laguna de los Tres at the end of a classic day hike.

  3. Perito Moreno Glacier Living ice

Los Glaciares National Park, Santa Cruz, Argentina

A vast, advancing glacier near El Calafate whose blue face calves into the lake before viewing boardwalks — one of the few glaciers you can watch break apart.

  4. Marble Caves

    General Carrera Lake, Aysén, Chile

Swirled marble caverns on General Carrera Lake, their walls glowing turquoise from the light of the water inside them.

  5. Península Valdés Wildlife coast

    Chubut, Patagonia, Argentina

An Argentine Atlantic peninsula where southern right whales, orcas, elephant seals, and penguins gather along a UNESCO-listed shore.

Patagonia's season is short: roughly October to April, the southern spring to autumn, brings the open trails, boat trips, and the calmest (still windy) weather. Whale watching at Península Valdés peaks in the southern winter and spring. Each guide notes the timing and how to reach it.
