Hạ Long Bay vs Phang Nga Bay: Which Karst Seascape Should You See?
Hạ Long Bay in northern Vietnam and Phang Nga Bay in southern Thailand are the two great limestone seascapes of mainland Southeast Asia: forest-topped karst islands rising sheer from calm green water, undercut by the sea into caves and hidden lagoons. From a deck chair they look like siblings. In practice they are very different trips.
Hạ Long is the bigger stage — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, with well over a thousand limestone islands and islets, best seen on an overnight cruise. Phang Nga is smaller and closer to the beach: a 40,000-hectare national park of 42 islands and mangrove shores, usually done as a day trip by boat and kayak from Phuket or Krabi.
Hạ Long Bay
The great drowned karst
A bay in the Gulf of Tonkin holding well over a thousand limestone islands and islets — described by UNESCO as the most extensive and best-known example of marine-invaded tower karst. Inscribed in 1994 and extended in 2000 and 2023, when the neighbouring Cát Bà archipelago was added. Usually explored on a one- or two-night cruise from Hanoi.
- Sheer scale — a maze of islands that fills the horizon in every direction
- Overnight cruises: you wake at anchor among the islands
- Quieter neighbouring bays (Lan Hạ, Bái Tử Long) with the same scenery
Phang Nga Bay
Hongs, mangroves and a day by kayak
A shallow bay between Phuket and the mainland, protected since 1981 as Ao Phang Nga National Park — 40,000 hectares with 42 islands, mangrove forest with at least 28 mangrove species, and a Ramsar wetland since 2002. Its signature is the hong: a lagoon open to the sky inside a hollow island, entered by kayak through a low sea cave at the right tide.
- Kayaking through sea caves into hidden lagoons inside the islands
- An easy half-day or day trip from Phuket, Krabi or Ao Nang
- Pairs naturally with an Andaman beach holiday
Head to head
| What matters | Hạ Long Bay | Phang Nga Bay |
|---|---|---|
| Scale and scenery Edge: Hạ Long Bay | Far larger: well over a thousand islands and pillars in the most extensive marine-invaded tower karst on Earth, per UNESCO. | Compact: 42 islands in a 40,000-hectare park, with mangrove shores and the needle of Ko Tapu beside Khao Phing Kan ('James Bond Island'). |
| How you explore Edge: Toss-up | Mostly from a cruise boat, with kayak and cave stops; one or two nights aboard is the standard, and day trips feel rushed. | Day tours by longtail, speedboat or larger boat, with sea-kayaking into the hongs as the highlight. |
| Getting there Edge: Phang Nga Bay | Fly to Hanoi, then roughly 2½–3½ hours by road to the harbour; boats generally sail late morning. | Fly to Phuket or Krabi, then 30 minutes to an hour by road to a pier. |
| Season Edge: Toss-up | Best roughly October–April. December–February is genuinely cool and grey, haze often flattens the view, and storms cancel sailings in the typhoon months. | Best November–April, the dry season; the May–October monsoon brings rain and rough water that can cancel trips. |
| Crowds Edge: Toss-up | The main channel carries a great many boats; Lan Hạ and Bái Tử Long are noticeably quieter. | James Bond Island is very busy at midday; early starts and the quieter hongs are calmer. |
| Fees and permits Edge: Toss-up | No individual permit — operators include bay fees in the fare. | A national park fee applies, sometimes included in the tour price. |
Which should you choose?
Choose Hạ Long Bay if…
…you want the bigger, grander seascape, can give it a night or two on a boat, and are already travelling in northern Vietnam.
Choose Phang Nga Bay if…
…you want caves, hidden lagoons and kayaking in a single day, and are based on the Andaman coast for beaches anyway.
The honest verdict
For scale, Hạ Long wins — it is one of the defining landscapes of Southeast Asia, and an overnight cruise among its islands is the experience Phang Nga can't quite match.
For ease and intimacy, choose Phang Nga: a short transfer, a day on the water and the hongs, where you paddle through the rock into a lagoon open to the sky.
Most people don't choose between them at all — they pick the bay in the country they're already visiting. Time Hạ Long for October–April and Phang Nga for November–April, and go early to beat the day boats.
