Day by day

  1. Skopje and Matka Canyon

    Base Skopje

    • Skopje to Matka Canyon and back — a short drive west of the city

Arrive and spend the afternoon at the canyon: a boat trip or kayak across the reservoir lake to Vrelo Cave.

  2. Into the mountains

    Base Mavrovo village

    • Skopje west via Gostivar to Mavrovo — about 95 km

Settle on the shore of Lake Mavrovo and walk to the church of St Nicholas, which stands in the lake and can be reached on foot when the water is low.

  3. Korab or the Radika gorge

    Base Mavrovo village

    • Drive down the Radika valley toward the Albanian border

Fit hikers can tackle Korab, the country's highest peak — a long, steep day with a passport needed near the border. Otherwise, explore the Radika gorge and the mountain villages.

  4. Lake Ohrid

    Base Ohrid

    • Mavrovo south through the Radika valley and Debar to Ohrid — a few hours by road

Three nights on the lake: swim and take boat trips in summer, and spend a day driving up into Galičica National Park, the mountain ridge between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa.

  5. Pelister

    Base Bitola or Dihovo

    • Ohrid east to Bitola — about two hours by road
    • Taxi or drive to the Nižepole trailhead

Start early for the hike to the Big Lake, about 9 km each way — six to eight hours return. Or walk the lower forest trails from Dihovo.

  6. Back to Skopje

    Base —

    • Bitola to Skopje for your flight — a few hours by road

Leave a buffer before your flight, or fly out of Ohrid instead and run the loop in reverse.

North Macedonia is small enough to cross in a few hours, and this week-long loop strings together its four great natural places. It starts on the edge of Skopje at Matka Canyon, where a reservoir lake fills a limestone gorge, then climbs west into Mavrovo National Park — the country’s wildest mountains, with Korab, the highest peak, and a church standing in the middle of Lake Mavrovo.

The heart of the trip is Lake Ohrid, one of the oldest lakes in the world, with three nights for swimming, boat trips and a drive up into Galičica National Park. The finale is Pelister above Bitola, the country’s oldest national park, where a long day’s hike leads through forests of the rare Macedonian pine to two glacial lakes just below the summit. Go in high summer for the mountains, and book the lake early.
