Best season & getting around

🗓️ Best time to go

The dry season, roughly late November to May, for calmer seas, better reef visibility and drier roads in the pine ridge. June to November is the Atlantic hurricane season.

🧭 Getting around

A rental car (ideally high-clearance) or a private driver for the mainland; the passenger ferry or a short domestic flight to the cayes; licensed boat operators for the reef and the Blue Hole.

Know before you go

  • Mountain Pine Ridge roads are unpaved and can be rough after rain.
  • Blue Hole trips run only when the sea allows; build a spare day into the cayes stay.
  • The Great Blue Hole dive is deep and needs advanced certification — confirm requirements with your operator.
  • All distances, times and prices are approximate.

Belize packs a surprising range into a small country, and this route takes it from the hills to the open sea. It starts in the pine-covered uplands of Mountain Pine Ridge, with waterfalls and caves in the Cayo hills, then drops south to the Cockscomb Basin, the forest sanctuary set aside for the jaguar.

The second half is offshore. From Caye Caulker, boats run out to the Belize Barrier Reef — Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley are an easy snorkelling day — and, when the sea is calm, all the way to Lighthouse Reef and the Great Blue Hole. Go in the dry season, keep a spare day for the weather, and leave the mainland legs flexible.
