The lay of the land
The Democratic Republic of the Congo holds some of the richest nature on the continent. Most of it lies under the Congo Basin rainforest, the second-largest tropical forest on Earth after the Amazon and a globally vital carbon store, home to bonobos, forest elephants, and okapi. In the east, along the Albertine Rift, Virunga National Park — Africa's oldest — climbs from forest and savanna to volcanoes, including Nyiragongo, whose summit crater holds one of the world's largest persistent lava lakes. The same mountains shelter endangered mountain gorillas.
