The lay of the land
Mongolia is one of the least densely populated countries on Earth, a land of open grassland steppe rolling into the Gobi in the south. The Gobi is an unusual desert — high, cold, and largely stony rather than sandy — famous as one of the richest dinosaur fossil beds in the world, where eggs and skeletons weather out of the rust-red Flaming Cliffs. Great singing dunes, hidden ice-filled canyons, and rare wildlife like the wild Bactrian camel and snow leopard share the desert with the nomadic herders who have crossed it for millennia.

Mongolian food is the food of the steppe: mutton, meat dumplings (buuz and khuushuur), dried curd (aaruul), and fermented mare's milk (airag) — hearty fare for a nomadic, cold-climate life.
Traveling responsibly

- Pack for big day-to-night temperature swings, even in summer.
- Leave any fossils in place — collecting them is illegal.
