🇲🇼 Natural wonders of Malawi
The 'warm heart of Africa' — a small Rift Valley country dominated by a vast freshwater lake holding more fish species than any other on Earth.
🗓️ Best time for nature: The dry season (roughly May–October) for the clearest lake water, best visibility, and easiest travel; the wet season brings rain and reduced clarity.
The lay of the land
Malawi is defined by its lake. Stretching some 580 kilometres down the East African Rift and plunging over 700 metres deep, Lake Malawi holds more fish species than any other lake on the planet — hundreds of brilliantly coloured cichlids, almost all of them found nowhere else, which have made it a landmark case study in evolution. Beyond the water, the country rises to highland plateaus such as Nyika and the forested Mulanje massif, with miombo woodland and wildlife reserves that have seen major restoration in recent years.
Where to begin
-
Lake Malawi
More fish species than any other lake on Earth, snorkellable from the beach.
A taste of the place
Malawian food is built around nsima, a stiff maize porridge eaten with relishes, alongside chambo (the lake's prized cichlid), small dried usipa fish, beans, and greens.
Traveling responsibly
- Base at Cape Maclear or Nkhata Bay for shore snorkelling and boat trips.
- Visit in the dry season (May–October) for the clearest water.
- Take bilharzia precautions and follow local guidance on swimming spots.
Malawi is defined by its lake. Running some 580 kilometres down the East African Rift and plunging over 700 metres deep, Lake Malawi holds more species of fish than any other lake on Earth — hundreds of jewel-coloured cichlids, almost all of them found nowhere else, which have made this water a textbook case in how evolution generates diversity. Along its clear rocky shores you can watch them by simply wading in with a snorkel. Beyond the lake, the country climbs to the Nyika plateau and the forested Mulanje massif. This atlas chapter begins in that extraordinary inland sea.
