The lay of the land
Chad reaches from the Sahara in the north to Sahelian savanna and Lake Chad in the south, and its greatest natural wonders lie in the desert. The Ennedi Massif is a vast sandstone plateau eroded into arches, pillars, and canyons, hiding permanent pools — gueltas — where a relict population of Saharan crocodiles survives thousands of kilometres from any river. Nearby, the Tibesti mountains hold the Sahara's highest volcanoes, and canyon walls across the region carry thousands of years of rock art recording a time when this desert was green and full of herds.
